Working in the Living Room: Online Jobs You Can Do at Home

Today’s fast-paced and competitive lifestyle leaves very little room for employment opportunities, regardless of what level of education you have. Finding a job today just simply isn't as easy as it was a few years ago. With companies turning to offshore outsourcing, jobs in the United States are fast becoming more difficult to come by.

Fortunately, there is an alternative to the conventional routine of waking up, getting dressed, and dragging your feet to work. The invention of the internet has opened doors for communication, commerce, and now, employment to anyone who has a computer and a high-speed connection.

Here are some of the most popular types of online jobs from home:

Home-based Writer

A home-based writer is usually someone who is paid to write articles about certain topics, or content for websites, but does so in the comfort of their own home. They are often paid by the article, although prices per article vary depending on employer, number of words, and keyword density.

Online Tutor

Working as an online tutor is pretty much the same as teaching to a class, except that the teacher and the student could be miles apart. Communication is often set up via chat, phone call or even video conference, which means being an online tutor could require a faster internet connection and software designed for seamless online communication.

Data Encoder

A data encoder gathers, organizes and enters pieces of information into a centralized database. Information such as client data, contact numbers, or even order history can be encoded manually into storage. Advancements in communication technology has lifted the restrictions of having to encode data from within the office. Many companies have incorporated web access to their servers, which allows data encoders to work from home.

There are hundreds of other types of online jobs from home, but they are often a variation or a combination of the jobs mentioned above.
